NO CHILD SHOULD
DIE FROM
PREVENTABLE
HEALTHCARE CAUSES.
A shocking number of children die from completely preventable diseases, most of them in the first years of life. Every year, 5 million children under the age of five die from preventable causes.
Marginalized children are the most vulnerable because they do not have access to quality health care such as vaccines, medicines or nutrients – all of which save lives. This is especially true in conflict and emergency situations or in poor and disadvantaged areas where it is difficult to keep children alive.
Girls and women often lack access to care or information during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. They may also have difficulty accessing health services or be denied the education to protect them from unwanted pregnancy.
Ensuring the universal right to health.
Every day, our teams save lives in hard-to-reach communities – whether in war zones or remote villages. We train front-line community health workers to diagnose and treat common childhood illnesses such as pneumonia, diarrhoea, malaria and neonatal sepsis, enabling them to deliver services that are proven to reduce child mortality.
We ensure that the most vulnerable families have the financial means to give their children the right kind of food and care to stay healthy. We ensure expectant mothers and babies receive care and information before, during and after birth to give babies the best chance of survival, growth and development. And we work with adolescents, their families and communities to ensure that the specific health needs of young people are met.
We also work with local and national governments to strengthen policies and systems so that no child dies from preventable causes.
